Welcome to Killing Jar Studio

I’ve always admired the artists who can whip-out an “About Me” statement like it were nothing. Well, here goes nothing;

My name is Leslie and I am a self-taught artist who has had a love for creating art of one form or another as far back as I can remember.  And though I create a little of this and a little of that, a love of drawing has always been what drives me further.  Artist’s sketchbooks being my #1 web search for inspiration, I want to see the drawings that led to the painting, the sketches before the sculpture and drawings for the mere sake of drawing. To me, drawing is the heart and soul of most art.

That being said, I started painting before I was comfortable with my drawing abilities. Sort of like starting backwards, I painted, sculpted and got confident with those abilities. However there was always this nagging little voice in my head telling me that I was cheating and misrepresenting myself as an artist because I couldn’tt draw.

Well, luckily that was a long time ago, I’ve come a long way and I’m not ashamed to say that I am still learning how to draw. I no longer listen to the internal psychobabbling critic – unless of course if she has something constructive to offer.  Still chasing the perfect line daily, but I love the chase!

Inspiration for me often comes from the oddest and seemingly most benign places. Finding the juxtaposition between the beautiful and the hideous in life intrigues me as do the artists who walk that fine line.

So, come on in, look around, tell me what you think.

You will find a mish-mosh of pieces here from my fine-art insect paintings to silly zombie cartoons, sketchbook scraps and everything in between.

  1. Being self taught and passionate as you are is a wonderful thing! Full of motivation and pure un-tampered-with creative ability! Following for the scientific side of your art. I’m slowly pursuing my dream job of working as a scientific illustrator myself.

  2. Hi Leslie,

    I’ve been following your blog and I’m really fascinated by your insect drawings and your process behind them. The drawings are so well crafted and your attention to light and form really makes each insect look like they’ll crawl off the page! I love what you wrote here: “Finding the juxtaposition between the beautiful and the hideous in life intrigues me as do the artists who walk that fine line.”

  3. You liked a comment of mine on another blog… and I couldn’t help but seek out your blog after seeing your avatar. Among the various things I’m doing, is a comic strip about insects.

    Back when I was in middle school, we had a thing called the Berkeley Book as a tool teaching us about human anatomy. Inevitably, I began calling it the Buggly Book and drawing sketches of insects on all the pages 🙂

    I’m sure that was an influence on how I got to what I’m doing today. I like what you’ve got going on here, and I’m about 3 seconds away from being a follower. 1…2..3…

      • Hi, it’s a pleasure, if you have a look at my 2nd last post the Liebster award there are questions you can answer ( if you wish) so everyone gets to know you better, then you can nominate blogs that you enjoy reading , there’s a bit at the start of my post explaining how it works and where I got it from ☺
